IT Industry... or not?

Selecting a college to join is getting tougher and tougher for the students that are willing to get into the IT industry. I will present some facts in this article that will help you understand the importance of selecting the right college for your education. This is relevant only for that set of people who want a job after engineering in the IT sector.

Even though there are various viewpoints in favour of an against the IT jobs, it remains a fact that it is the area where most of the engineers in India get employed out of campus. A lot of people call IT engineers glorified clerks while others call them the face of India, just to mention a few arguments. There is also no denying the fact that lots of engineering college graduates are attracted to the industry. The reasons are manifold and are good salary, possibility of overseas travel, status associated with the job among friends and relatives, presence of opposite sex at work, city life etc. Whatever is the reason there are takers for these kinds of jobs and that too in numbers. The recession has taken a toll on the charms associated with these jobs but it still remains a fact that large number of students aspire to be in these kinds of jobs.

For this set of students who are willing to look into this sector for their jobs, it is very evident that the there needs to be thorough research done before joining the colleges. Add to the search parameters like placement statistics, reputation, a new dimension seems to evolve here. Infosys has a regulation that people who have a consistent academic track record only need to appear for their selection process. So they have a set of mark requirements to suit these criteria.

The mark requirements range from class 10 to class 12 to engineering. This tells us that consistent academic record is important for any student and that school students need to look at board marks carefully. Over and above that the cut off mark for engineering for Infosys is 68%. Now if we look carefully at the results from various universities, we can find that there is great disparity among the results.

From the numbers it seems that MG university students score more than 68% quite easily when compared to the other universities in Kerala. Therefore, the input being divided almost equally across the state, one can assume that MG University is more liberal in giving marks in engineering. Therefore an MG University student will have more chance of appearing for the Infosys test if one were to appear for the selection process of the company. It is also noted that the deemed universities are very liberal in giving marks to their students for the courses that they do. That may also explain record admissions from those universities into these companies. As such if you are a bright student, getting marks will not be a difficult thing to do but for the average and just above average students these parameters also may be of use in selecting the college that you will join.

This does not ensure that you will get the placement but it certainly ensures that you get an opportunity to prove your mettle. Moreover, it will give you just that extra bit of freedom, were you to be the liberal kid of engineering student. Many things to ponder over before admission; just the little bit more here!!!
